Creative Advertising film night promotion // Blurred hand out initial development

First layer to be placed on trace

Second layer

After printing out this at the early stages to see how / if it would work I quite liked the effect of the trace with the printed text on over the samecolour background, but my only worry would be that the yellow type on the second layer would still be visable and therefore the type could be readable all the time which is not what I want.

I will need to print it properly before I can see if it works but after talking with josh I decided to had a third layer and instead of having type on the trace layers I will just print the image on the trace and only have the type on the last layer so people will have to peel back the layers before they can seethe information.

How I intend the flyer to work

New production method

i will print both a blue and a yellow layer on trace which will be layered up to create a blurred photograph which is all people will see originally.

The third layer will hold the type as you can see below so once the first 2 layers are pulled away the required information is legible and readable promoting the phrase 'I was bland but now i can see"

Creative Advertising film Night Promotion // Business card

the business card concept comes from this moment in the film you can see below, this is what Eddie is presented with when he is introduced to the drug for the first time, therefore I wanted to try and re create the effect and visuals of the business card in the film, while using it as a tool to promote the film night.

Here are the first variations of the layout and colour, The top one is probably the most closely accurate to the original, but visually it doesn't really work that well

Chosen design

Creative Advertising Film Night promotion // Acetate pixel poster

Both myself and josh are doing our own version of this poster, The imagery is inspired from the newyork visuals in the film, the colours we have chosen are based on the contrast between dark and light, and the typeface is chosen as it is the most similar one I could find that was similar to the typeface used for the Limitless title.

The concept behind this poster is to use a series of individual acetate sheets and create a collage between then while spreading the type over the top. The posters will be placed on windows around the college to let natural light power the poster.

This is how the final poster will work, all the sheets are aligned together to create this readable collage, once the layers are printed in colour then the effect will be really interesting.

Creative Advertising film night promotion // Perspective poster

The first idea that we really were motivated to start with because we loved the concept was the perspective type, the idea is to create a series of posters that are all presented at different depths but from a certain position the posters work together and there is a readable message on the poster. this links to the fractal zoom that is constantly used throughout the film.

we first tried modeling it at a small scale to work out how we would layout the series of posters but we found this really difficult to do accurately and realised that we would need to do a life size version and project the design onto the posters to give us a starting point.

We set up a series of A1's hanging at different depths and levels and then projected our proposed design onto the sheets to see what information would be needed on each poster.

In theory this idea would have worked really well, but after 2 days of trying to accurately mark out what information would be needed on each poster, the exact size and depth of each layer as well as us trying to work out how and where we would set up with promotion. We ultimately decided that it would take us too long to figure out and produce and as we want to create a series of outcomes we just didn't have the time to spend this much time on one element. therefore we decided to leave it, even though I did feel a bit dis heartened because I think it would have worked really nicely if we would have succeeded.

Creative advertising film night // Initial Ideas

After watching the film we had a huge amount of ideas and wanted to try and see how many we could produce over the course of this project, the ideas we have come up with are all inspired by emotions or specific scenes from the film so that everything we produce will be able to be linked back to a specific part of the film.

We want to try and make our designs as interesting as possible because as we are not including the name of the film in these promotions we will need to make the advertisements intriguing enough for the viewer to want to come just to see what it is all about OR we need the products to be that closely related that it is obviously recognisable for people who have already seen the film.

Pill and business card

This links to a scene from the film when Eddie is first introduced to the drug, he is presented with a pill and a business card.

Giant perspex pill

as the pills in the film are clear and see through, we thought that perhaps we could produce a giant perspex pill on the laser cutter, the pill would be made out of several layers and the middle layers could have information carved out of it to be a giant pill / 3D advertisement.

Secret Monitor

This is something I came across a few months ago and thought it would work perfectly for a 'I was blind but now I can see' concept. Our intentions are to do this procedure with an LCD monitor and produce a short video clip promoting the film night, we will make some polarized glasses and leave them with the screen, the screen will be placed around college so that people can approach it and put the glasses on and be able to see the advertisement, the effect of this is pretty impressive so it should produce a good response.

Blurred handout

Some form of layered hand out that is covered by misted acetate or some other similar material, so only one aspect of the handout it clear at all times, but when the hand out it removed from it's cover then it will be fully clear and sharp, to relate to the supposed effect of the drug.

Answer machine

An answer machine is constantly referenced throughout the film so we thought if we left an answer phone around college with pre recorded messages in a similar style to the film but that promote the film night, this would be an interesting product that people are bound to interact with.

Book

The main character in the film is an author so there is constant references to his career and writting, so we thought we would produce our own book and promote it as his own, but we will only include a small amount of text purely to reference the film and promote the night.

Brain model that lights up

During many scenes when he is ingesting the drug, the camera zooms into his head and shows how the drug is stimulating his mind, they do this by visualising the brain lighting up. This is where our concept came in of producing a 3D model of a brain that lights up and perhaps included the information of the event, like a giant illuminated advertisement.

tab handout

Another hand out that your need to move or play with in order to make the text legible

Pixelated visuals

In reference to a side effect of the drug, we are considering using acetate sheets to produce a similar pixelated effect to the film with one of our advertisement.

Creative Advertising film night promotion // Secret Monitor the making of

First we managed to find a LCD monitor in Oxfam for £3 which was useful, then e procedded to remove the existing polarised film from the front of the monitor, which is what translates the light from the screen into image.

Then I spent about 4 hours removing all the glue from the screen with sticky stuff remover. which wasn't fun.

This is our finished monitor, with some 3D glasses, as you can see the screen projects just white light, without the aid of the glasses, this is what we will play our promotional video on, but before we can do that we need to purchase / find some circular polarised film and we need to make our own glasses as the glasses we are using here have the film going in the wrong direction so you can only see the screen from a tilted angle.

Creative Advertising Film Night promotion // To buy / To do

After deciding on the products we wanted to produce we had to source the materials needed for each of the jobs:

- Monitor - 3D Glasses - Polarizing Film (for glasses) - Old Phone with Answer phone - Empty Book - Acetate - Small Button Bags
We also decided to split the products up so that we could both get on with something different and maximise our use of time. We constantly conferred and made final design decision together in order to keep the products consistent and to help give some guidance.

Creative advertising film night // Chosen film - Limitless

We had decided that we either wanted to follow through with the films

- Limitless
or
- Fight Club

but we eventually decided that even though we both preferred Fight Club that Limitless would actually probably be quite a good option, as it is firstly an extremely popular film, it is gender neutral, it has a unique and well known storyline, and is filmed in a visually unique style.

Again we watched Limitless and made initial notes about possible products or themes we could follow.

Visual references

use of colour

throughout the film a constant reference to Eddie Morra's use of the drug is conveyed through the use of colour and light, anytime that he is not on the drug it portraits his life as a dull, dark and shadow filled.

dark shades of blue, grey and black are utilised when showing his NZT free life

whenever he uses the drug the brightness and colour of each shot is changed. bright and vibrant colours and lights lift the film.

bright yellows, golds and creams are used as well as more vibrant colours in general, even the blues and darker shades are altered to a brighter tone and portraits the feeling of happiness and control.

Many references are made to phone messages, the messages are used to inform the viewer of his change in luck and progression.

the side effects of the drug also create different visual techniques which show his ack of control and hallucination, the shot below is a referenced shot showing his vision breaking up his sight into pixel like vision.

further hallucinations continue to pop up throughout the film, he see's solid objects transform into moving image, such as a flip clock style ceiling.

when the drug is initially introduced, his 'dealer' gives him a business card with the pill, this could be utilised as a product.

These are a few possible visual options we could resort too throughout this brief. Our aim is to use consistent visuals from the film to create the visual element of our products but we may use small references throughout the film to produce further relevant advertisements.
