We needed to find a film that people would enjoy and recognise, as well as a film that has many strong visual and story themes that we could utilise throughout the creative advertising process. having strong recognisable themes from the film will make it much easier for us to create a broad list of possible outcomes.
we came up with an initial list of movies:
The Evil Dead
Dawn of the Dead
From Dusk til Dawn
Natural Born Killers
Clock Work Orange
We are both a fan of film style of Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, who both share a similar directing style and both rely heavily on a unique and beautiful way of shooting their films. This in turn results in each of their films being visually very individual. Robert Rodriguez has strong links to Central America in many of his films and utilises Mexican and Texan desert landscapes and colours as a foundation for his filming style.
One of his most visually appealing films which he wrote and directed is the film 'From Dusk till Dawn'. being set mostly on the desert roads of southern Northern America and resulting in Mexico , Rodriguez uses colour to create a relaxed and slightly comical theme to this horror comedy.
By using the natural colour of the American desert and creating beautifully accurate sets whch are based on the motel and gas station style signage, Rodriguez captures a consistent filming style throughout and keeps adding to the colour orientated visual element by introducing huge amounts of neon signage into his sets towards the end of the film as they reach the strip club in the Mexican desert.
These elements would allow us to incorporate a similar visual style into the creative advertising products that we decide to create.
While watching From Dusk till Dawn we tried to make notes of any initial ideas that we could use for products.
- Benny's world of liquor Signage - Texas Road Map - ' Plant yourself in that Seat' - Seth and Richie Gecko - List of Rules (First Motel) - Dew Drop Motel - Flaming Toilet Roll - Hand with hole in - Mr 44 (Gun) - Am I a fool (mirror) - Death toll 16 - Jacob Priest - Precint 13 T-Shirt - Retainer - United states Border - Feliz Viga sign - Mexico - Titty Twisters Sign - Gravy Train - Motor Home - Mug Shots - Wanted Signs - Neck Tattoo - Nude Dancing Sign - Motor Bikes - Sleaze Sign - Tequila Shots sign - Bottle of Whiskey and 5 Glasses - Body Guitar - Pool Cue weapon - 'Don't be a Fool' - Welcome to Slavery', 'No thanks I already have a wife' - Garlic Sunlight, Holy Water, Steaks - Cigar - Gun & Bat - Cross Bullets - Holy Water pistol - Snake - Mariachi Band - Aztec Burial Ground
We originally were very certain that this is the film that we would pick, as it is filmed beautifully and the cast throughout really do the film justice, however towards the end of the film when the vampire side of the story becomes apparent the film takes a dive towards being a little bit too cheesy, even though this is another factor that Rodriguez is famous for.
We eventually decided that perhaps this film is a little too focused towards a masculine audience as there is large amounts of violence, gore, cheesy special effects and female nudity. We are not suggesting that all women would dislike this film, but instead we are trying to be more realistic that it is probably not gender neutral and we should probably try to choose another film that is perhaps a little more female friendly.
